cracking lids

Recently I have been throwing lids on domed plaster bats. In the past (many years ago) I had great success doing so. Now it seems that often the underside of the lids crack soon after the lid has released from the bat. I wax resist the knob as soon as appropriate to retard thr knob drying faster than the lid. [I do thid to all attachments like knobs, handles, spouts, etc.]

I'm using ^6 clay; sometimes recycled and sometimes new. Seems there's a greater loss ratio from recycled clay.

Anyone have an explanation and insturctions how to avoid this in the future?

Thanks for your help!

Hi Johnnie,

I think the reason is: the plaster has absorbed the water from the =
underside of your lid and it is trying to shrink - and cannot compared =
to the top of the lid - so it cracks.

Remedy - perhaps dip the plaster bats into water briefly before you =
throw on them so that they do not suck the water from your clay quite as =
aggressively? =20

If you don't need the lids to release from the bats quickly then soak =
bats longer so that the clay is essentially air drying - then you would =
probably not need to wax the knob [unless they are drying in a draft],
