I agree entirely with Brian above. Sure, Peg Malloy's site is beautifully
designed and a pleasure to see, and Richard Dewar's site is a nightmare.
There ought to be a big "KILL THE MUSIC" button on his site that the viewer
can hit to rescue them from that torture.
But there is always a happy medium, and like Brian, I like the idea of my
website being a personal document. I don't want someone else controlling
it. I am changing my website all the time. It is just a FrontPage website,
and I know that they are not nearly as stylish as is possible with
DreamWeaver and some other software, but it serves my needs very well. I
know that any good designer really collaborates with the client, so that the
finished website is really tailored to the client, but there is always the
chance of the web designer imposing their own style so that the website
actually interferes with the honest presentation of the artist's work. I
think that this can be a very slippery slope for artists. It is essential
that their website really reflect the style and mood of their work.
And I also agree with Brian that with the web design programs available
today, there is absolutely no reason to learn HTML language. Too many other
good things to do with your time.
