The young German boy who spent the summer with us
here, has hoped to come back to the US.
Daniel, 17,now 18?) is profoundly deaf, loves
beginning pottery, wants to be a potter and has NO
opportunity to do so at home. In addition he would
like to improve his English, with which he does
remarkably well.

I have not spoken to him about this yet because he's
had anough disappointments in the past few years.

is there anyone out there who would take hiim on as an
apprencice next summer? To clean the studio, do
whatever work and workworkwork on improving. He ONLY
has summers to do this. And I'm sure his parents could
pay for room and board. GREAT kid, truly!

Marianne

YES We would take on any apprentice that is willing The key word is willing
We have been having a really hard time getting any kind of help We have tried
barters and all we get is attitude about being to good to do menial labor
such as re claiming clay and the such We have tried paying people We cannot
afford to pay that much so we have sweetened the pot with giving total access to
the studio {we have the best equipped studio in NYC} and on that note yes we
do! But these kids that we are getting out of schools with ceramics degrees
are not really clay artists so the studio becomes useless Besides these kids
that have degrees{from schools that I would have given my right arm to go to}
don't even know how to load a kiln or make a glaze!I am sorry I know I am
rambling, ranting ,whatever but we need help We don't even know what to do we
are willing to pay ,give studio space, teach, a combination of the above We
just want someone who is responsible, moves faster than a slug and doesn't think
they are g-ds gift to the art word {no one is} Any help is welcome. {a team
of little pottery elves would be nice}

Hello Cindy,

I JUST NOW saw your reply...I have no idea how I could
have overlooked it!
Let me tell you about Daniel. He spent 4 wks with us
last summer. He is THE nicest kid, truly someone
everyone loves. He cleaned my kitchen, helped fix
lunch or just did it, helped Carl to scrub the
sailboat clean - you name it.
His deafness puts him in a different place than
others, which i am sure you can understand. I believe
he will be 18 this summer. He is a steady worker and
only complains when he is on the verge of death :)
Daniel wants to learn everything and watches (partly
because of his deafness) with great care. Very
observant. His brain is in great shape, so is his
smile!

He wants to be a potter/clay artist and wants to learn
everything he can. Has very little /no opportunity at
his school for the deaf in Freiburg and no time on
weekends after/before his long trainride home. That's
about it.

An apprentice-ship (learning/improving) would fill him
with immense pride. His vacation is shorter than those
of American kids, dates still to be determined.

He "speaks" English (sounding like a deaf person),
german, some French. He really wants to improve his
English and worked so hard at it last summer. I am
sure that you would find this a mutually beneficial
arrangement. I don't know how "fast" he moves - part
due to his deafnes he watches where he goes better-
but he is steady as a rock and reliable. He can pay
for room and board. If you choose pay him a little
money (little is good) he would think he'd gone to
heaven (or the USA) and back! But it is not necessary.
My son cannot house him in his tiny studio, but he
lives in Brooklyn also! Are you going to the
streetfair (music and art) this Saturday? If so, we
may meet. My son (Sander Milks) is one of the
original..6?8? who organized this!

Hope to hear from you. Two other people had really
positive responses-I feel so lucky for hium. I just
told Daniel about my idea today - didn't want to
disappoint him so I just bounced it off today.

Oh - Thank you for responding! Marianne
