McMaster has a catalogue out that has just about anything you could imagine
for tools inside... I sat down and drooled over this book that is about 3"
thick ... If this book doesnt have it you dont need it giant grins...
I have not gotten any of this material yet but I plan to . Michael Sherrill
of extruder fame uses this material and turned us on to this catalogue in a
workshop I attended last winter. Sure does seem like it would work lots
better and easier than steel / metal that I used for my last dies. I have
also in the past used the lids on the huge buckets you get at restaurants
for handle dies. but that plastic wont stand up to bigger dies.
My project this past winter was to make a rectangular butter dish ( insane
project ) but it was HUGE FUN because it was a challenge.... the first one
was made out of slabs only and took 5 hrs to construct.. I spent time
drawing and figuring out shrinkage rates and sizes . then searched for( hooray
for dremels) tools to get a start on cutting thru some metal my husband
got at work ( machine shop/ powdered metal ) had to go thru a brent extruder
barrel thats only 3" so I had to notch it out some... learned that sharp
corners are not acceptable so had to make another die set that was curved
corners.... I believe I spent 2 weeks on this project before I ended up with
11 butter dishes and had whittled the time from 5 hrs to 2 hrs...
I sure hope David Hendley can come to western NC one of these days.. I
am dying to spend days in a studio or school room hyper focused on making
dies for extruders.. sounds like HUGE FUN to me..
I'll wrap this up with a question to the pro's on what the best tools on
the market to use making dies.... the dremmel and a rat tail file did the
job but good grief what a pain ...
ps I have a old old brent extruder and it came with the expansion box so
they use to make them at one time... I bought mine off a potter that went
out of business back in the 80's .
chow for now, Cat Jarosz
ps I sorta have a web site.. daughter is working on it without me right
now. Its all her doing and I hope to make a contribution after the end of this
yr's elf business when I can focus and also start taking recent photos now
that my NEW EZCUBE just arrived in the mail today She used old slides
and old imfo I have with no imput from me .. There might be a picture of
the butter dish on the site.. go to price list and click a dot.
Has anyone used leather hard pictures of pots in progress or just
finished in their web sites ?
