Greetings
Potters for Peace trains Third World potters in the production of a low
tech ceramic water filter. In many cases we require a FOOD SAFE sealant to
apply on the inside of the terra cotta (pottery) water receptacle.
Does anyone know of a FOOD SAFE sealant that we can use.

Dear Ron Rivera,
I take it that glazing these pots with a food safe glaze is out of the =
question due to cost or lack of materials.
Since you will be seeking a solution that will not deteriorate due to =
bacteria or fungi you will be limited to a Mineral solution.
My suggestion is to wash the interior of each of the water posts with a =
solution of Sodium Silicate in Well Boiled Water. Sodium Silicate =
solution has been known for several centuries. It was used by farmer's =
wives to cover Eggs in Storage for several months and worked by sealing =
the Egg Shells making them impervious, isolating the contents of the =
eggs from air and bacterial
Liquid Sodium Silicate is available in industrial quantities. Tell the =
manufacturers what you wish to do and ask them to suggest an appropriate =
Density.
Best regards,
Ivor Lewis.

Ivor
Thank you so much for the suggestion. The problem is for marketing purposes we need a Food Safe Certificacion of the prodcut we will be using that will be coming into contact with the stored water.

Ron

I have found a sealant that says that it is non-toxic. A Canadian
company manufactures it. It is called WeldBond (one word). I use it to
seal my pit fired pots and they then hold water. If you want to make
sure about the non-toxicity, I would suggest that you check Google for
their address and write to them about your intended use. Remember it is
a Canadian company, not the American Weld Bond material. It is a liquid
that I cut with water to the consistency of skimmed milk. One or two
coats usually suffice and is very inexpensive. I have heard that they
sell this in larger quantities as well.
Warm Regards,
