my gold watch

It was over ten years ago I rode my HD Heritage Softail down to my clay
suppliers house to pitch the idea of "Around the Firebox" a column for
Contact magazine that Frank owned. The editor Barb Tipton and John Chalke
were there and we launched it. It was meant to be controversial and get some
feathers flying. I wrote for Contact until it folded and then I pitched the
column to Polly Beach at Clay Times. After 4-5 years of deadlines I asked my
buddy David Hendley to help out and that kept me alive for the past few
years.
A couple of events have convinced me to move on from the column. Frank
phoned me and said I still like your writing but you've lost your piss and
vinegar. Frank is right. I read one of Kelly's posts were she said her
friend advices that "one should always leave a party just about when they
want you to stay" Kelly's friend is also right. I read some of my old stuff
and I liked it better than current writing.
My mind is happily occupied with my pots at this point and the writing just
seems to get in the way of them. Once again I've asked a friend whose
writing I love on Clayart to take over as David's new partner. Look forward
to the new stoker for "Around the Firebox" our favourite mommy- Kelly
Averill Savino.
Polly will announce my retirement in the next issue with my last swan song
article about my neighbours junk yard. It's been a good ride and I hope
David and Kelly will enjoy it for a decade or more. this could be a
substitute for Kelly's MFA.
This is not the end of my writing, just the end of deadlines.
So this is retirement- gotta go load a glaze kiln.
I'll rest when I'm dead!
Cheers,
tony

Tony....
Forget it! You are not off the hook!
No pension, gold watch or ugly golf pants for you as
long as you are still posting to Clayart.
Frankly I prefer the racy unedited versions we get here!
Plus we get them more frequently.
So quit your yappin' or rather.... keep on yappin'!:-)

Oh Tony,
I have really no clue what this is all about, but I
feel so sad! Somerthing important just blew away with
the wind - that's what it sounds like. You've made me
all sad. Now what!
Whatever it is that you are leaving, I am sure that
you will attack your years ahead with the same love
and vengeance I have read from and about you this
short year. You can't be sad; you make people happy,
and make them think, question, their spaces, and
laugh, and create. Do, please always look back at
everything with wise eyes and a filled heart. We
rarely hear the good places our thoughts fall, but
those still remain the ones that count. I don't know
why I want to say all this. As I said: i'm likely off
the mark. So contribute it to a good heart!
Ah: any news on the workshop? How about the one in San
Antonio??
