One of my students, Jody Windus, has had a Shimpo Whisper for about =
three years now, and has given it heavy use. I emailed him about it, =
and his response is below. Jody is a big guy and very strong, so when =
he says that he can stall it, but he really has to work at it, that's =
saying something. =20

Message from Jody Windus:
I have had it since about a year prior to getting here - so three to
four years. Yes, I think it is a real solid piece of equipment. It is
the first version of the whisper - I hear the next model is even better.
Particular features I really appreciate are:

1. The high level of torque that is available at low speeds. It is a
strong wheel, I can stall it, but I really have to work at it.
2. The control on the wheel is smooth. I also like the pedal with a
stick mounted on the wheel. On my tall pots where I stand up on a cinder
block or 2, to throw, I can "kick the stick" to change speeds.
3. I really like the way the wheel spins free when the power is off and
it acts like a banding wheel. This really is nice when I am adding
coils.
4. It is quiet. (and it doesn't interfere with a radio)

As an aside, I bought the wheel online from a well known supplier. When
it was shipped, UPS dropped the box somewhere along the line. It was
delivered by UPS, the driver convinced my wife that it was OK to accept
it. (Mistake) Long and short of it, the supplier bailed and told me to
call Shimpo. Shimpo had me send them photos, and then shipped a new
wheel out immediately. They didn't even wait for the "damaged" wheel to
get back. Shimpo is all right by me.

Just as a point of clarification, there are two shimpo Whisper
models: The RK and the VL. The RK has the attached footpedal with
the "stick," which is probably the one Jody has. The VL Whisper came
out about a year after the RK. That's the model that has the
adjustable legs mentioned in the original e-mail.

PS Vince, I think it is reprehensible that the supplier who sold you
the wheel didn't assist you in getting it replaced after it was
damaged by UPS. It is the shipper's responsibility to make UPS
claims (consignee if freight). Not only that, I have always believed
that the company who sells you an item ought to take care of your
needs after the sale is complete, whether that be shipping damage,
warranty work, further explanation/instruction or whatever. I think
it's great that Shimpo replaced the wheel for you, even though they
really didn't have any culpability in the whole transaction. Kudos
to Shimpo!
