i have had the surgery.
it was a breeze.
about 10 minutes. hand surgeon/a great one in my opinion.
he has been a friend for about 15 years.

he will tell anyone.
`don't confuse carpel pain/numbness with repetitive pain/inflamed hands.
sore hands do not mean carpel. `
it means you have a small carpel tunnel.

i never had pain while throwing..i had a numb left hand at night.
sorta like alka seltzer in my hand...or no feeling at all. it is critical
that a neurologist do the work up.

getting my carpel tunnel cut, and having lasic surgery on my
eyes were great events of my life.
hands are fine, and i can see without coke bottle glasses.
and, i have no night vision problems. i see better now than
i have ever seen in my entire life. total surgery time for both
events...14 minutes. amazing.

additional fast comment -

Same thing (more or less) happened to me. My doctor poked , prodded
and tapped my wrists and agreed that it seemed to be carpal tunnel
problem, but when I added that I would sometimes wake up at night
with the pain she advised me to wear the wrist braces for a while,
because a lot of people sleep with their hands twisted in odd ways - it worked.

I had wrist problems early in my career (cysts at the joint). I think I
was lucky to have problems so early because it taught me to take steps
to avoid repetitive motion injuries. Sitting at a wheel for six hours
every day is not a good thing. Throwing the same form all day is not a
good thing. I throw for an hour. Get up and do something else. Come
back and throw a different form for an hours. Do some slab after. Load a
kiln. Anything to not be stressing parts of my body. Follow this program
and you will minimize your injuries. Another rule of mine--never carry
what you can roll. Everything in my studio is on wheels. I move pots
around on racks rather than ware boards. Kiln shelves are on a rolling
cart. Take care of your body from the start.

made a big difference! what i thought was the begining of carpel tunnel stuff, was really just bad sleeping conditions of my hands.
