as long as we are doing bonnie math, try this one.
(many have heard me tell this story)
teacher at the university walked in.
`i sold a painting for 10,000 bucks..new york.
painting will be hung in a professional sports arena.`
whowowoooo, all the mfa students pee'd their pants.
i said.
`do the profit loss on that painting.`.
he said..` gd damn you mel, ruin my party.`
so, i did it.
new york gallery 60/40
he made 4,000...
no. fica now comes out...he made 3,000.
no. 1,000 discount from the artist as it will hang in a public
place.
he made 2,000
no...state and federal taxes.
he made 600 bucks.
no...no...he had to fly to new york to finish the sale.
plane, hotel....he made
hmmmmmm...minus 400.
no...paint, canvas...linen, golden arcrylics...it was a huge painting
5x13 feet.
he is now 900 in the hole.
no, no...he paid jason to help him...how much did jason get paid?
1,400 bucks over the year.
so...we are now 2300 in the hole.
oh, well, did not matter. he is an assoc. professor and needed the sale
to help him get to be a full professor.
we were very happy for him. painting is really nice, and hanging in a
very public place.
mfa students learned a great big lesson that very few professors will
every show them, tell them...or even hint at.
it actually takes a potter, that sells work for a profit to know about
such things. in fact he said to me...`how the hell did you know all that?`
experience. over 55 at the time. no illusions of granduer.
jason did alright though. had whiskey money for an entire year.

Oh Mel, ya just had to raise that ole reality check thing.
But it wasn't quite correct. Artist got to deduct all those expenses so
probably broke even on the whole deal. And there was the establishment
of price for the artists work. Once one has sold to such a venue, their
price goes up along with their career. Chalk it up to PR and price
status.
Nonetheless; your point was well made. It ain't the selling price but
the profit.
We find ourselves often working for minimum wage, but we love the work.
If money was the only motive many of us would get a regular job. Thank
god it isn't the only motive.
