fiber adhesive confunsion

I'm still experimenting with raku kiln construction and am now moving on to
fiber but am confused about adhesives and a rigidizer. I plan on using 1
finch thich #8 kaowool and double laying it. Can I attatch the first layer
to the garbage can using a refractory cement (to bond fiber to metal) and
then use Fiberfrax to glue the second layer over the first, or should I use
sodium silicate? I had also planned on securing the blanket with ceramic
buttons and then spraying a coat of ITC100 over it. Is ITC the "rigidizer."
I have been to the well of the archives and am thouroughly confused now.
Thanks for any help.
Jeff Guin

Dear Jeff Guin,

I was face with repairing my fibre kiln earlier in the year. Knowing the =
cost of refractory cements used with ceramic fibre I looked around for a =
substitute. Material of choice is Sodium Metasilicate, Na2O.SiO2. =
(Na2SiO3) Melting point 1098=BAC which is, from memory, within the raku =
range. I am firing up to cone 8 at the moment but intend to go higher.

This cost me $AU 30 plus freight for Five Litres. Repaired Kiln has done =
three firings with no problems as yet.

This will work for Metal to Fibre adhesion and for the interfacing of =
fibre to fibre. Brush onto the metal and apply the fibre. It may be =
possible to dilute Sodium Meta-Silicate with water and spray it on to =
act as a rigidiser. All you need to do is to test a sample.

Be sure you get the Meta-Silicate not the Di-Silicate which has a much =
lower melting point.

I would support the use of Ceramic Buttons on the basis of one for every =
square foot area inside the kiln. By the way, yesterday's firing was No =
360 for my 4 cu ft gas fired top loader and where there was no damage is =
almost pristine. You can secure ceramic buttons with 2 mm 18/8 or better =
Stainless Steel Filler Rod.

I know nothing of ITC products. Mel can answer your questions about that =
stuff.

Have fun.

Best regards,

Ivor Lewis.
