Elizabeth,
Have you tried dyes (Dr. Martins) or the relatively new
acrylic inks? I have used both of them like watercolors.
The inks are quite powerful and do not fade on paper
when exposed to sunlight. I have not tried them on clay.

I call them "cold finish"
I love watercolor pigment with a sealant.
Very thin acrylic leaves a waxy look.

it is called `room temperature glaze`.
it is just a form of sculptural color.
nothing to worry about.
each artists has to think to themselves...`how long
will this last?` some don't care.
two weeks is a lifetime to some.

we find people who think that the world started the year they were born.
like the small child said while looking at black and white pictures,
`when did the world turn to color?`
