i have asked susan if i could post her name and
email address for clayart.

`of course`....she said

if anyone wants to post susan at:

Susan Nebeker

she would be glad to share some of her sales knowledge.

in fact...she corrected me. she sold $12,000 worth of clay
work in two hours.

she makes very special garden related clay work.
it is the garden work that sells the most. she does a line
of standard bowls etc...but it does not move out the door
like `garden accessories`.

her work is very `charming`...and not for galleries or
shows. it is made for gardeners.
and, she knows what they like and will buy.

she lives in the idaho/washington border country.
and, she has a wonderful friendship with heidi haugen...another
terrific western potter.

She'd probably do well in Japan too. They are nutz about gardens here.

Mel,

Your comments about sales and susan's sales are very interesting to me.

I don't do art shows. I go to art shows. I love them. Great places to
just look around and see what is going on......admire everyones
craftsmanship and artistic point of view. But I never ever "Do" art
shows. To much work, not enough sales, just not my thing. I look for
alternative markets. I sell at Farmers Markets, Home Shows, Spring
Garden Shows, Outdoor Shows, Fall Hunting shows, Ladies Shows, almost
any show but art shows. And I sell to some stores. I do well. I have as
much work as I can handle, and some of the commission work that these
activities have generated is substantial. Right now I'm working on a
single commission that will net me a years wages when done. And there
are others on the horizon. And it all came about when I shook out of my
brain the need to satisfy my ego in doing art shows. I use a wheel, I
hand build, I pinch, I coil. But I also sculpt, and mold and slipcast,
and china paint. and I sell every single piece I can produce. And I do
it not at Galleries, Art Shows, and Art Fairs, but at all the
alternative markets. It paid me big bucks to get my head out of the art
clouds and my feet planted firmly on the practical terra firma.

I encourage everyone to look hard at the alternatives to doing "Art
Show's". Your 50 mile radius thing for sales is one of the best things I
ever read about. It really works and I thank you for the tip.
