Dear Mudbuds,
I have had success with a Faux Celadon at ^6 electric by using a boron frit based
clear glaze, with 0.5% copper and 0.5% black stain. I have also used 0.25% cobalt
carbonate and 0.5% black stain to good effect. The secret is, there is no secret.
Just experiment.
Using the base recipes from "Mastering Cone Six Glazes," and colorants from other
favorite glazes, I can make a pallet of hundreds of colors. The tough part is finding
out what temperatures they like, and where to place them in the kiln. All part of the
job...
For Floating Blue, I got tired of playing around with Gerstley Borate in the recipe
out of Chappelle's book. I took the base recipe for Xavier's Warm Jade (Revised) and
added the FB colorants. Makes a much better and more predictable glaze.
For those who want to try:
Custer spar 22
Frit 3134 16
Whiting 12
Talc 9
EPK 20
Silica 21
--------------------------
Total 100
Add:
Cobalt oxide 1
Red iron oxide 2
Rutile 4
Bentonite 1
Epsom salt saturated solution 2 tablespoons of liquid for approximately 3.5 gallons
The Faux Celadon works really well over soft faceted bowls made with a textured wire
cutter, in the fashion Hank Murrow describes on his web site. It LOVES texture!
The Floating Blue (revised) works very well with Licorice, Soft White, Xavier Warm
Jade, iron and manganese underglazes, and copper/nickle wash overglazes.
Have fun!
