paperclay in the pugmill?

updated tue 13 dec 05

I have put paperclay in my peter pugger w/ no problems, but it does not have
one of those grid things on it. If yours has a grid thing on it, the paper
fibers will get hung up on there and be a mess.

i can't imagine a problem from running paper clay thru the pug mill. i've done this with my mix of saw dust clay. the only thing to realize is that you'll want to open the pug mill one day & take out the extra clay left over to use *regular* clay without any extra stuff getting blended with it.

i have a walker brand pug mill.

see ya

Anyone had experience in this kind of thing?

I am about to embark on a paperclay/ paper porcelain project. In preparing
porcelain with pulp , is there any problem with running it through the good
old Bluebird pugmill? I have the pug mill and want to get the maximum
benefit from it.

Anyone had experience in this kind of thing?

I don't know if you can put paperclay through a pugmill, however, I have
made porcelain paper clay with my clay scraps very successfully without one=
.
I just let the scraps dry out, add water to make the slip and then mix in
the pulp the old fashioned way with a drill mixer. The fibers can get wound
up in too many mechanical parts. A paper artist I know mixes his pulp with
large bakery mixers- a Kitchen Aid on steroids and it works very well.

I used to make paper clay in the clay mixer
(need a Soldner for that) and run it through
the pugmill without problems. I did have to
run additional clay through after, though, to
get out most of the remaining bits. Paper clay
tends to spread about, turn up where unintended.

I have a Peter Pugger and use it for mixing paper fiber with several
different clays for doing sculptural work.

As an aside, I have found that paper clay doesn't throw as well although not
bad; I find that its very acceptable particularly if your in to joining
thrown sections. I've been rolling out slabs of paper clay and storing them
on a ware cart letting them completely dry; when I wish to use them I wrap
them in a wet towel for a few minutes and presto they are ready to use.
