I don't know if this has been suggested before, but, having no horse, I asked our local music store if, after re-stringing violin/cello bows, could I please have the old stuff. No problem. He was glad to get rid of it, and I was glad to have it!

Good lord, 2lbs of horse hair would last the rest of your life! Just find a
person who owns a horse (call yer local zoo) and ask 'em to save you the
tail hair when they groom. Geez.
