fw: bead wire urgent help needed

Dear Clayarters,

I am trying to fire demitasse spoons on a tall bead rack with bead wire
that is rated for cone 10 and I'm firing to cone 6 1/2 to 7. Problem:
the wire is bending to a U-shape, sagging and causing the spoons to rest
on the kiln shelf. I'm firing 8 or 9 spoons per wire, weighing a total
of 85-96 grams (or 3-3.4 oz).

I have to fire 150 of these little buggers for a wedding that's coming
up in a couple of weeks. Any wisdom to share?

think of the set up as a wire bridge - you need more bridge supports. one or two & the whole works sags. support more often in between the spoons. it's deceptive at room temperature, but at full cone things get soft! (as you see).

use little clay posts every few inches to maintain supports along the length of the wire. use your cone 10 claybody (or more kiln posts). wet is ok, like your cone packs. maybe have one spoon between two supports. how much extra wire do you have? you might want to buy more...

see ya

Hi Kasia,

Pre-Bend the Wire...into a saw tooth row of "V" or "W" shapes and suspend
it's hi sections on stilts so the Spoons hang down in the bottom of the
Vees...

Or get heavier wire...use it 'straight' and have one Spoon or two between
as-close-as-possible of stilt supports...

I think that oughta do it...

Good luck...

Happy Holidays...

Kasia, even fairly thick supports will bend into a U shape with big beads,
much less spoons.
I have had better luck when I support the middle of the bead wire with a
kiln post. I do not even use my bead trees at all, I just rest the mandrels
on kiln posts, both ends and the middle.
So you get fewer per mandrel, but you will not loose as many in the firing.
Best of luck!

Kasia -
As long as there is nothing maintaining tension on the bead wires, they will
sag with that much weight on them. To avoid that, you need to make your own
"stantions." Make a supply of heavy, hollow clay cones, with walls about
1/2" thick, and make them tall enough so that the spoons will hang above the
kiln shelf. Poke an appropriate-size vertical hole in the top of the cone
to accept the wire. Bisque-fire the cones. To use them, take a six-inch
section of wire, and bend a 1/2" right angle in each end. String four or
five spoons on the wire, and poke the right angles of the wire into the
holes on top of two cones. The cones need to be heavy enough to maintain
the tension on the wire. You will have to decide how many spoons you can
string on each wire/cone setup. With this system, the only way the wire can
sag is if it actually stretches, and that is very unlikely.
Good luck -
- Vince

Perhaps quickly make some new supports out of slabs of a high fire clay [a
crank body?], which is like a number of wwww's in a row - like this -

I_I_I_I

- hang just one spoon in each gap?

Dear Kasia and all,

If I was doing this I would support the spoons on those bar stilts
that have wire pin supports in a row. They are about 4" long. I
have some that have the supports every 1/4", some every 3/8". Three
spoons could probably be supported between two bars. The vertical
space this would take up in kiln would be minimal. I bet if you are
doing such a project as this you would find other uses, too, for this
particular stilt.

Just looked them up at Axner.com they are item 254368 #4B-15 , take
a look and see what you think. This is a commonly available stilt.
