Peter Pugger is closed until 1/2, and a new machine has arrived I'm
dying to hook up, but there are not enough diagrams to explain what to
do and the written stuff is not very intelligible.
Does anyone know (for the VPM-20) what the MUFFLER is? I don't find a
part that hooks into a second port on the vacuum motor. (The red line
from the back of the machine is probably the one that hooks into the
port marked "A" . The instructions talk about an 'intake' and 'exhaust'
port but these are not labelled on my machine.)
Is it possible the muffler is a separate part didn't get sent? I don't
find anything that would screw into a second port.
If anyone knows, sure appreciate the input! Lesley ljonesa@cox.net

Lesley,
A quick way to determine the intake and exhaust on the vacuum pump is to
switch it on for a second. The exhaust side will blow air. That is where the
muffler goes because vacuum pumps without mufflers are noisy.
Hook the intake side to the vacuum fitting on the mixing chamber and it will
work without a muffler. I always install an air filter on the intake side of
vacuum pumps to prevent damage from dust in the mixing chamber getting into
the moving parts. Congratulations and good luck,
Regards,

Hi Lesley. Lucky you, a new Peter Pugger. Merry Christmas. As far as I am
concerned, the Peter Puggers just keep getting better and better.
Every vacuum pump has an intake and an outlet port, and you can quickly find
out which is which by simply turning the unit on momentarily to see what
happens at which port. Vacuum pumps can be fairly noisy, so a muffler on
the outlet port is a good idea. It also reduces the chance of dust or
critters getting inside the pump. It is not absolutely necessary, however,
and it would not hurt to run the machine without it, at least temporarily.
Obviously the line from the intake goes to the vacuum hookup on the pugmill.
If they did not supply a muffler with the pump, and if the outlet port is
threaded for standard tapered pipe, you can go to a small engine repair shop
and buy a muffler with a 1/2" pipe fitting, and then to a hardware store to
get the necessary pipe adapters if the bore on the vacuum pump is 3/8" pipe
or 3/4" pipe.
Good luck -
- Vince

I am in the same position. Waiting for PP to open January 2nd. But I
think the "muffler" is the grey bullet shaped piece with a black base
that came screwed into the opening for it. Mine, too, does not have
labels for port 'A' or 'B' nor 'intake' or 'exhaust'. But it seemed
pretty clear where the hose from the Pugger went into the vacuum--as
it is threaded and has the same adhesive that the hose has.
I hope someone who really knows how this works will respond for both
of us! Happy New Year!

it was very easy to set up. i got one of these rolling wire carts from sam's
club, i set the second shelf up to the height that i needed. since it has
wheels, set it up so i am able to wheel it to a table to receive the pug.
its a little tricky getting the right size load, i think its better to
overload it a little at first as it seems to work best with a full load, pug
out the excess, then go through the process of making the clay exactly how
you like it, even slightly wormed.
