This may be mostly of interest to California potters due to
the cost of shipping tile and the time involved in packing, but the
offer is open to anyone.
For the last four years I've been making one type of specialty
tile for a well-known architect/designer here in northern California,
Fu-Tung Cheng (www.chengdesign.com and www.teance.com). So far I've
managed to integrate it fairly well into my regular schedule of
cone 10R firings of functional and one-off studio work, but now that
I've decided to spend a significant amount of my time on further
investigation of water-soluble metal colorants, I realize that I just
can't do the tiles anymore, and I want to sell off that part of my
business.
The tiles have grossed an average of about eleven thousand
dollars a year (low was $5000, high was $37,000) and Fu-Tung wants
to continue to offer them as an option to his clients. A CPA
friend told me that a rule-of-thumb way to value small businesses is
to multiply the average gross by 1.5, and make that the asking price,
so I'm asking $16,000.
The price includes all clay and glaze recipes, two large ware
racks, tools for cutting and finishing, approx. 300 squares of
sheetrock for drying, dollys for moving stacks of tiles, and a
reasonable amount of my time going through the making and firing
processes with the buyer. Interested parties can email me for further
information, (garyholt@covad.net) and if you know someone who might
be interested, please pass this on. Thanks, Gary Holt
