Sorry I plucked this with interest from the archives since I have been =
off
clayart while I moved house and studio to Delaware.
With my new home there is a lot of sulfur smell in the water and =
after
trying to learn how to get rid of it I found that high iron in the water
both dissolved and not, can create the sulfur smell in some instances,
bacterial thing. So that would lead me to think perhaps the iron in the
water is of that just the right amount of iron to make iron yellows. =
Perhaps
like a dilute amount of ferric chloride that I use on horse hair. I am
anxious to try it out but not in my white glazes, once the kiln area is =
back
up and running.
Whose idea was it to downsize, move house and studio into a smaller =
home
in a less expensive area. I have never seen so many boxes and that was =
with
selling, giving away, and throwing out tons for over a year prior to =
moving!
For the time being I will have to throw and glaze upstairs, looking out =
over
the boat traffic on the Delaware river, and fire in a large shed in the =
back
yard. I found out after moving it may be difficult to get a permit to =
build
a studio as I had planned and been reassured I could do since I am in a =
100
year flood plain. It has forced me to get creative about the space I =
have
and when and with what ammunition I will need to approach the county =
that
just says no!!
One unexpected plus after I had originally gone back to dial up, ugh =
,
they installed fiber optics, FIOS, along my area of the remote Delaware
coast. It is sweet.

When I was at a friend's studio when washing the smoked and pit fired
pots I also got a lot of yellow on the white areas. We decided that it
was the sulfur in the well water that we used. The odor of sulfur was
not really apparent except in the upstairs bathroom when brushing my
teeth. I didn't mind the addition of that color as I felt it was a
natural occurrence in the process of doing rustic firing methods. Those
pieces have been sold so I do not know if the yellow faded or not.
