when you give away a glaze recipe you only start
folks on a journey.
what is more important is knowing your clay body, and
understanding how your glazes interact with that clay body.
i have said many times on clayart.
KNOW YOUR CLAY
UNDERSTAND YOUR CLAY
MAKE YOUR CLAY YOUR OWN
then, for sure.....trust your clay body.
often folks are using a clay that has no
bearing on what they are making. they just
found a commercial body that seemed ok.
not a good thing.
trading glaze recipes is often a futile activity, if you
are only looking for identical results.
glazing has so much to do with thickness, timing,
bisque temperature, and of course, how you fire.
i am know working with 5 potters on the
chinese temmoku saga. kurt wild and andy kazukewicz are working the
yellow iron. bob anderson is working on the red and black, susan
karrash is working on electric temmoku/leaves.
each has found brand new color and surface with the same glazes
that i have used. brand new. in many ways you can hardly recognize
the glazes.
so, the timing of six different potters with the same glazes, different clay
bodies and different firing habits produce six different sets of pots.
not surprising at all.
so, the journey is long and hard. you must take a glaze `idea`
a set of chemical givens, then at some point, make it your own.
so, giving glaze ideas to folks is easy. not hard at all.
but, many want more than that. they want your pots.
