Hello all,
Please welcome a lurker who=92s taking the plunge! I am starting to work
with the glazes from the MC6 Bible on Sheffield ^6 clays 16425, Shef Z
and 4-D. Have checked the archives and don=92t find anything specific
there... so...would love any info anyone has discovered using these bodies
with these glazes. I am happy to share as I progress as well.
Thanks in advance. I look forward to my first ClayArt exchange.

Hi Cynthia,
I keep a database on glaze fit vs. clay bodies for MC6Gs, but I have =20
nothing on Sheffield clay bodies. I'll be eager to see any responses =20
also.
Regards,
John

Cynthia,
I've been using Sheffield clays for a few years. When I began, I tested
several of their clays. This was 3 or 4 years ago and I don't recall all
the details but I remember I really disliked Z. I may have gotten a bad
batch but I found it full of "stuff", almost like reclaim. I was a real
novice at the time but found it particularly difficult to throw with.
I also tested 4D3BM. I still occasionally use it and find the M^6G glazes
fit pretty well.
For my white stoneware I settled on Sheffield W1A. It's a lovely clay for
throwing, very smooth and easy (they refer to it as a porcelaineous clay),
BUT a number of the M^6G glazes craze very badly on it. Ron Roy has run
some tests on this clay I've had to ask him for help with lowering the
expansion of the M^6G glazes to fit it. The Licorice fits very well when
mixed from the recipe in the book, but the Glossy Base2 by itself crazes
very badly. The Variegated Blue fits well without alteration, but the
Raspberry needs revision.
I'm now in the process of choosing a different clay and am opting for the
Tucker clays.

I've also used Sheffield's 4D3B and the T6B without any problems with
glazes from MC6G (Bright Sky Blue, Raw Sienna, Waterfall Brown,
Variagated Slate Blue, Bone and Spearmint. I'm just starting to make
some things with W1A. I agree with Jennifer that it's a very nice clay
for throwing, but I'll find out if the glazes fit. My favorite clay
from Sheffields has been the 4D3B.
