A few years ago, I discovered the Bay Area Pottery Show in San Jose.
It's an annual show featuring antique and collectible art pottery
(Rookwood, Roseville, McCoy, Niloak, Peters & Reed, etc).
The show is a great place to see how design ideas in ceramics have
evolved over the past century. And some of the pieces, despite being
"manufactured," are really works of art. (In a few cases I've had
the chance to handle models and masters that were later reproduced by
casting, jiggering, or press-molds.)
After 11 years of running the show, Steve Sanford, the founder,
decided it was time to "retire" from running the show, and generously
gave me a chance to take it over. I'm very excited about the program
we have lined up this year. We'll have some really knowledgeable
dealers, including Steve Sanford himself, Suzanne Perrault and David
Rago from Antiques Roadshow, and numerous other authors and experts.
We've also lined up a preview of "Color Counts - Gladding McBean:
California Commercial Pottery 1930 - 1950" - a show that will open at
the American Museum of Ceramic Art in September. And we'll have an
educational exhibit of "Pottery Fakes, Reproductions and Knockoffs,"
compliments of the American Art Pottery Association.
The show is January 28 and 29, and all the details are on our website
at http://www.bapotteryshow.com/
I hope some of you are able to come by, and please stop and say hello!
