Could a person who is red-green color blind
tell the color of the fire? I am sure it would be
different, but would it be consistent enough
relative to itself to be an accurate marker?
I have noticed a distinctive "brightness" to the
fire that is not the same as the color.
Having turned about a half dozen kilns off due
to various circumstances over the years, I was
always reassured that I knew my kiln because
I could tell by the color whether it was going to
be ok.
My chimney kiln has been a joy in part because
of the colors of fire that come from the different
bits and pieces added for colorants. The open
fire rather than a closed kiln is access to a wild
kind of beauty.
And I have read and heard that old time potters
fired to finish at night to get the best read on
the color as they blasted to the end.
