masking tape and wood glue

I've finally worked my way through the 3,000 messages which had accumulated when I moved and had a problem getting back on line. It was an interesting and educational adventure, complicated by the fact that as I would view 50, another 50 would arrive. Fortunately, I could get rid of threads I didn't wish to follow, knowing the information would be available in the archives when I could use it.

There are two items I wished to comment on: one is "masking tape". I have never been able to find one that will adhere to leather-hard clay. I can find various graphic-arts tapes that do adhere, but not masking tape. Two is the use of white glue/wood glue as a resist. I have tried it and it works find, but I also read where one can mix colored slip into it end up with slip deposited in the resisted void. I couldn't make it work, but may have used too little slip. I still got the resist effect, but no color.

I should clarify that while I have only been working with clay for a little over three years, I did not come to it early in life. My first class was at age 62 when I retired from another life. Driving by the university art school one day I saw a banner advertising, among other activities, ceramicas. I inquired and found English speaking teachers. I'm about to begin my eighth semester there. Fortunately, after the first two semesters the facilities are available as a taller or workshop.

I should have begun much earlier. I have always been drawn to the concept of making things with clay, but never allowed myself to to indulge. Really silly since I live in San Diego and had world class facilities available to me.

I am more than a little awed. Clay is large; vast even, and I am aging rapidly. There is so much to learn. I learn a little and it seems as if it only exposes how much more there is.

Thanks for being there,

I wrote about that but it's not slip, although I think that would
work, I do it with terra-sig. Try adding more slip. or watering down
the glue a bit. And by the way any white glue will work, not just wood glue

How was it "not working"?

Russel, thanks for your response. It was "not working" in that no color was deposited in the resist areas. The resist itself worked fine. I will try with more slip in the mixture.
