gold /silver/bronze leaf - another approach!

There is another way to put gold, silver, and other metallic colors onto
clay surfaces. Metal Powder!

I will sometimes enhance a fired clay surface using a metallic powder.
There are more than 72 different powders, including more than 10 gold
colors alone. The trick, of course is, HOW? Simple, my friend! Using
paste wax, and a stubbed brush; stipple a little wax on the brush end ,and
then stipple a little metal powder as well (from a separate container).
Again, stipple directly onto the surface of a clay work. Voila! You now
have a fairly permanent application. Repeat the action in the same area for
greater intensity of color.
. Flat? Or matt? Leave it be! A sheen or glossy surface? Polish with a
soft cloth to the degree you desire! I have used this approach often over
the yrs. Sometimes in conjunction with sizing and leaf application too.

Also, how about impregnating a controlled area with carbon to make it black?
Neat! Paste wax is an organic matter. Just brush wax onto the area you
want to have carbonized, and run a soft carbonizing flame over the area
until it looks like it is growing fuzz! Bingo! Rub the fuzz off when cool
enough with an old rag. Sure enough! There is an area of clay impregnated
black surface!!
What a way to "fake" pit firing! Works best on bisque ware as the carbon
sinks into the clay body.

> I got some good info on gold/silver/bronze leaf applicattion (thanks to
all of you who responded) and I have done these applications many times on
motorcycles and custom cars (i was a custom painter/graphic artist for many
years) and then coated the leaf with clear laquer or polyurthane for
protection. .

> But as to clay: What my question was is: Has any potter applied
gold/silver/bronze leaf to pottery, then coated it with a clear glaze and
THEN FIRED IT TO MATURITY??? What were the results? I would rather get this
info than make a bunch of stuff and fire it and find that it doesn't work.
Thanks a bunch, Sam in Daly City
