Hello! I am new to this forum as a wanna-be potter, and I'm looking for advice. I have recently
acquired an old Vulcan kiln, one of the big oval models. It takes about 12 hours to reach cone 05
and 17 hours to reach cone 5 for a glaze firing. Are these "normal" amounts of time? It seems
long. Some of the firebrick on the lid is chipped and heat is escaping. Besides replacing the
firebrick, are there other ways to better insulate the kiln and help it reach temperature more
efficiently?
Thanks for your expertise!
Marlene

Marlene, your firing times are long. But they may be normal for that kiln.
Is the kiln rated to cone 5? The electrical data plate should list the
maximum temperature.
Is the wall outlet of the correct voltage?
Another possibility is that the elements are worn.
Sincerely,
