Hello,
I just joined clayart. I wanted to post a question about a clay body. I am
looking for a porcelain clay body that flashes well in a soda firing. If
anyone knows of a good one to use I would appreciate getting a recipe for it.
Thanks so much!

Kelley,
Can't remember where I got this, may have been Michael Wendt (who runs the
Helmar Co., wendtpot@lewiston.com) He may have listed others in the
Archives.
It gives good flashing.
HELMAR CLAY
cone 10
41.66 Helmar Kaolin
25.00 Custer Feldspar
8.33 Kentucky Old Mine #4
25.00 Silica
Hope it helps,

Kelley:
Too many variables, dear. ALL porcelain bodies can flash well, BUT....
It depends on what type(s) of kaolin(s) were used in the body, assuming =
you
are not glazing the pots, or...
If you are glazing the pots, how the glaze interacts with that clay in =
the
body, AND...
What type of wood or combustible material you're planning to burn, =
AND...
A million other variables, such as how long you're firing, what temp =
you're
firing to, if there is a soak, when you soak, if you fire down...and on, =
and
on, and on.
(This list is by no means complete, BTW)
Pick a body, ANY body, then follow the advice of the gurus: TEST! TEST!
TEST!
Good Luck!

One of the nicest materials to substitute into a porcelain body (my opinion)
to creat flashing effects is Helmer Kaolin. You can use your favorite body
formula and substitute Helmer for whatever Kaolin is listed.
If your local supplier does not have it in stock, any Laguna Distributor can
order it for you.
