I'm firing my L&L electric kiln to cone 6 today. I programmed =
it to =20
go to 2199=BAF with a 20 minute hold, then fire down at 150=BAF per hour =
=20
until 1500=BA, then shut off. When it started into the "hold' cycle, I =20=
shut off the vent, which had been on up until then.
My reasoning was that the kiln would stay hotter without the =
vent =20
and wouldn't require so much energy to keep it at top temperature or =20
to slow the cooling.
Is there any reason to leave the vent running during hold and =
cool =20
down?
I'd appreciate any input on this. (Mr. Howard?)
Thanks, Lou in Colorado=

Hi Lou,
I think it depends on what type of kiln vent you have. If it is =20
mounted on the wall away from the kiln, like most L&L vents are, it =20
is probably fine to turn it off as you start to cool. Whatever fumes =20
are going to be emitted will have been on the way up. But if it is =20
the type of vent where the blower is mounted underneath the kiln I =20
would leave it on. Otherwise, it may overheat and you may shorten the =20=
life of the fan motor. I don't like that "under the kiln" design of =20
kiln vent for this and other reasons which I have explained before in =20=
other posts. The wall mounted type is clearly superior in my opinion.
Regards,
John=
