Hello Ivor and all who wrote,
Thanks for all the replies to my post. I neglected to mention in my =

because of a mine closing and replaced it with something else that was =
similar. So there is an explanation; it was just very annoying that the =
company did not have the courtesy to ask if we still wanted it (since it =
really wasn't the same clay) before shipping such a huge amount.=20

explained. As I said earlier I have had that problem. It was explained =

to me that the clay cam from a different level and face in the quarry. =

But no technical explanation.

So, suspect a high Halloysite in your sample and think "Bay of Biscay =
Clay".>

Dear Andi;

Have you suggested that the clay be returned for a credit? I would do
it (and have done it) in a New York minute. Perhaps you might bring a
bag to the clay company and suggest that someone there 'show you how to
throw it'. Bet it would embarrass even a skilled thrower.

Cheers, Hank
