i added another picture of a guy on his side, kicking and
a guy on about twenty batts, standing up high, and finishing
a pot.
like vince described.

i love finding these pix. i have a picture someplace
of a guy in bahrain, with a bamboo, lashed together wheel.
kickin like crazy....and the wheel moving all over the place.
but, the pot was perfect.
also....the wheel in leach's book.
from india.
an ox cart wheel on the ground...spinning.
of course it has a large wobble.
i met a guy in madras and he did the demo for
5 rupies. i gave him twenty to keep throwing...but
he was tired. amazing stuff.

and then i hear from people that have a brent that is off
120/thousands...and are complaining.
crap, make pots, the wobble is your best friend.

Mel,
Richard Peeler's films on the potters of Japan has a clip of the
guy laying on his side kicking the wheel. What amazes me is the
diameter/spacing of the vertical pegs that are being kicked compared to
the size of the work. There is very little flywheel motion to keep the
spin going. It seems that if the shaft had any kind of wobbble, you
would end up with a rounded four-cornered form. We have oval matt
cutters so why not a oval wheel? Hmmmmm
