Dear Christine,
Best of luck with your endeavors in the realm of salt firing. Here is a clay body that I ran a few tests on in college. Be sure to properly test it for shrinkage, durability...etc.
Salty Dog's Equal Parts Body cone 9-10
Silica 20
Custer feldspar 20
XX Sagger 20
#6 Tile Kaolin 20
Foundry Hill Creme 20
If anyone else tests it, I would be interested in the results.
As for slips, Try any of these clays at 80% with Nepheline syenite at 20%
XX sagger, EPK, Helmer kaolin.
#6 Tile clay at 95% with Nepheline syenite at 5% and 2% Bentonite is also good.
These slips should go onto greenware at the slightly moist leather-hard stage, they will crackle nicely if the clay does not have enough moisture content when applied. If you are after crackle be sure to salt them well, fluxing the slip enough to avoid occasional flaking off later.
I hope this is enough for a start. If you are serious about introducing sodium into your kiln, I would recommend obtaining a copy of "Salt Firing" by Phil Rogers or "Soda Firing" by Ruthanne Tudball. Best of Luck to you,
John Boyd

Dear John and Salty Aficionados;
Here is the Jordan body I referred to earlier. Really looked like a
Brook Trout!
Bob James' Salty Trout
Missouri Fireclay..............45
Platic Vitrox........................15
Ajax P.....................................15
Jordan Clay...........................15
Wyospar...................................7
Silica ..........................................3
water.........................................26

When I compare this body with some of the cone 10 bodies I have data for I
see it going to be overfired at cone 10 - it's more like a cone 8 body.
I would suggest lowering the custer to 12.5 and raising the tile 6 to 27.5
- and test that - I would also do a version with EPK instead of Tile 6 and
test that as well.
If you find the shrinkage too much consider some fine grog or even Kyanite.
