credit card use for group shows

Hi Judy,

The Berkeley Potters Guild takes credit cards, and has for at least 25 years
with no problem. We collect the sales tax, and return the purchase price,
including the sales tax to the member. The member is responsible for
remitting the tax to the county.

I think you can form a group that can approach the card company for the
system. All I think you need is a bank account in the Guild name. The card
company will probably be able to tell you what else you need to do.

Yes, you will increase sales. A very large percent of out sales are credit
card sales. When your sales base increases, the percent paid to the credit
card company declines. Definitely a good thing to do, IMHO.

Hope this helps,

Hello Potters,

My guild is thinking about taking credit cards for purchases at our =
group shows. Up until now we've only taken cash and checks, and we're =
trying to increase sales. Payment is made centrally for all purchases. =
As we are not a formal business entity of any kind, I gather that one of =
us would have the contract with the credit card company. In other =
words, we'd all be using one person's card processor. We would not be =
adding on sales tax at the point of purchase, as each person's pots =
include tax and they are individually responsible for remitting sales =
tax to the state. Has anyone had experience with a group of this type =
using credit cards in this manner. If so, did you notice a measureable =
increase in sales? Thanks for any input.

Judy,

Any time I have been part of a group, they've used my credit card =
machine. Everybody just pays me the percentage that the bank charges =
for anything purchased w/ a credit card. The bank never knows the =
difference. Accepting credit cards will definitely increase your sales.

Judy
At last count 2/3 of all our in situ sales are by card, debit & credit,
so we are biased towards offering customers card facility.
We have an EFTPOS terminal in our showroom, but, we also keep an
imprinter, just in case.
Our small pottery group has an ocassional display at one of our bigger
local wineries.
Credit cards are used for the bulk of sales, so, we lend the group our
imprinter,
a mobile phone is used to OK over limit sales.
At the end of the display time Jan writes a cheque to the group
for the amount put through our merchant account, less account charges.
The group also gets the advantage of tagging onto our lower account fees.

Hi Judy,

I was thinking that the person whose account takes all of the credit card charges might one day have to talk to the IRS about all that unclaimed income! So, it seems to me that you'd have to have a bullet-proof way to show whose sale each is.

I'm not bringing this up out of total paranoia. They don't check every charge receipt (although in an audit they could), but I do know that in restaurants for instance, they take an average of the tips given for all charges and assume that each server gets that percent tip! It's why I always give the tip in cash if I can.

BTW, note new address. Too much spam (hundred or more each day), so I started a new account, used for Clayart only. Took the @$%^%$^**$#$&^ spammers two days to find me and this addy hasn't been posted on any website yet. Ph _ _ ck phishers.

This is a disposable account from Yahoo. When they find this one, I can delete it and start another disposable account. Real address now is:

Linda
Jan, who does all of our bookkeeping & taxwork, enters these types of
sales as a credit in the miscellaneous income category & the repayment
cheque as a debit on the same account. The trail is clear, vouchers,
receipts etc are filed. Jan has used this in reverse for on-road
expenses for a couple of my voluntary groups expenses & reimbursements.
Our taxation dept has accepted Jan's offerings for over 38 years so I'm
not gonna quibble. The Oz tax dept just wants a little blood, they don't
want to dine on your prairie oysters like I hear the IRS does.
