Greetings, all. On my return from 5 days in Kauai with my California daughter,
I spent four wonderful hours with Barbara Brown. She fetched me where I
spent two nights at daughter's abode and drove me back down to her home
in Sunnyvale, CA. Beautiful garden with a David Shaner memorial in the
front, her work as well as that of many others in a gorgeous garden with
black river stones and lemon tree. Her home was packed with pots that
equaled trips through
about 8 museums. Barbara travels all over the world and has for years
arranged trips re ceramics. She had arranged a workshop for Paul Soldner who
had stayed at her home just the week before.
Then she drove me to a splendid studio/teaching setup/supply store, named
Mother Earth Clay Art Center, owned by Clayarter
Abby OConnell (hope I have the last name right) also in Sunnyvale. It is housed
in one of the empty facilities that was part of Silicon Valley where mainframe
computers died out.
On the way back to my daughter's home in Menlo Park, she drove me into the
Stanford campus to see Andy Goldsworthy's serpentine ground sculpture of
stones. This one
didn't disintegrate with the weather and it was raining as we walked around it.
Goldsworthy is one of my heroes and I am still thrilled by that frosting to
my trip via Barbara's very generous spirit. Her work is also impressive and
of course we met via Clayart some years back.
An aside of that same day: I accompanied my daughter, a prof of Sociology of
Law, to her rehearsal of a Bulgarian band (forgot the name they use for the
band)
with 8 different instruments. She played gedulka. I took a book along but
at the home in Los Altos Hills I found an amazing book about Andy
Goldsworthy and spent just about
the entire time looking at it. It covered all his media: ice, leaves, wood,
stones,
twigs, mud etc.
Regards,
Bacia, home and grateful
