Tony-
Easiest and likely the safest way to get a rick black obsidian body is to reduction cool. Talk to John Neely or Wil Shinkaruk or just about any alumn from Utah State University. Fun stuff. Nothing difficult about it either. Hardest part is tightening up every bloody crack in your kiln and reducing only during the cooling period. Nice rich red-brown bodies turn wicked black. Even buff bodies tend to a nice gunmetal grey.
The downside to reduction cooling comes when you deal with glazed surfaces. You tend to get a lot more pinholing and such. Just more gases doing their thing and interfering with the melt. Worth playing with for sure!

Hey Lee,
Yes, like Robs and one I saw from Laguna. I have an opportunity to use a mixer so I thought I would mix some up for tea bowls. Yes, I know Rob, really enjoy his work. Maybe I will email him and ask him. Awhile ago he and were trying to locate the diffusion burner that Sensei Shiro Tsijimura uses on his anagamas. He said he found the company but had to reply--last I recall. Working on trying to get to Japan.
