for the archives

I just received an off-list question from a fellow Clayarter as to
whether I had received any responses. I did receive several off-list
responses, and I really appreciate their help!!! What a resource
Clayart is!!! - in "real time" ... and, the archives, too!!!

I have, also, been reading Clayart about preparing casting slips from
clay bodies, and I think the broad outline of my answers are here. I
should make it clear that I was not asking about casting slips, but
rather, decorating slips.

I have decided to write a follow-up of the conclusions to which I
have come for Darvan 7 regarding my questions --for the archives,
AND for other Clayarters who may be watching for responses.

As a first cut, and in an effort to keep things simple (not
necessarily my natural inclination), I am following this procedure:
I am tentatively going to treat the Darvan 7 solution as a liquid
product containing 1.16g material/cc. So, for every 100 g of solids,
I will measure out 0.25 g Darvan 7 solution into 40g (= ml) H2O, and
go from there, adding additional Darvan 7 until I reach the desired
viscosity. From what I have read on Clayart about preparing casting
slip from claybodies, this is a similar approach, but I am utilizing
a smaller amount of deflocculant in the slaking water. If I need to
reduce the water further, I can try using higher % of Darvan.

It was, also, pointed out to me that the percentage of
polymethacrylate in Darvan 7 is between 24-26% by weight, and is to
be found in a materials safety sheet published by the manufacturer,
R.T. Vanderbuilt.

I am back in the testing mode...
