Kathi-

This is straight from the FAQ page at Mason Colorworks:

Q. What are "encapsulated" pigments? Are they safe to use? A. Encapsulation is a special, patented, manufacturing process designed to incorporate certain metallic oxides into the crystals of zirconium oxide. They are also referred to as "inclusion" pigments. They are safe to use, and are now widely used in ceramic manufacture around the world. Obviously, as with all finely dispersed powders, care should be taken to keep operations as dust-free as possible.

Nothing here says they are dangerous, should be tested or anything about toxicity.
Like John and Ron say, test it on YOUR pots if you are worried. As for pots made by industry, they ARE tested. Read the fun stuff in Ceramic Industry and you'll see all the testing that industry is required to perform. Imports are a little different. Read some of the press releases from Fiesta/Bauer/HomerLaughlin.... all of whom are using these new inclusion stains.

It has taken nearly 20 years to find a good replacement for the old lead/cadmium/selenium reds. I would do some testing on your claybody before worrying too much.

Everything I've ever read about selenium said that it was extremely
toxic and leaches out of glazes. Therefore, I was surprised (horrified
actually) to see red dinnerware which looked alot like copper red) at a
local discounter that was labeled as containing selenium.

I've already written to John H. about this. and would like the opinion
of some chemical people before I approach the company or better yet, my
senator.

Thanks,

Kathi
