wide, shallow kilns?

I have an L&L with an interior 36x36x18 deep. This size isn't good
for really tall things, but terrific for everything else. Since I am
firing mostly student work, there hasn't been a problem with the 18"
high limit.

The computer keeps the temperature very even. In fact, it is so even
that I can't load for the variation in temperature that I used to do
with the other kilns. But I love it and wouldn't give it up! I had to
get it because I can't reach down into a deep one any more and can't
get down on the floor to check the cones. And yes, I do still use
cones and check them. I fire to cone ten and breakdowns can happen
more frequently at that temperature -- but so far all is well.

I am finally setting my own studio. My space has 208v, single phase service and is limited to a 50amp breaker. Firings will regularly include platters thrown to 24" wet, and the only electrics I can find, new or used, that will accomodate the platters, cone 10 or 8, and my electric service are the various 23-28 inch width models that are 18" high.

I am concerned about even firings in kilns of these dimensions, particularly if I have to settle for something with a 23" interior width. Any folks firing similar items in kilns like this? Any observations or even educated conjectures?

Thanks.
