barium replacement, what do you think?

Hi all,

As I have said in my last missives I have this
wonderful recipe that calls for barium, and since I
will not use the barium to make the recipe I have
replaced it with str. carb., however the glaze did not
turn out the same. As I have learned from all of you
wonderful experts, amounts replaced with other
chemical compounds must compensate for molecular
weight.

Here is the recipe for Starshine. I have loved this
glaze because it is consistently a beautiful glossy
glaze in the green family of colours that borders on
both a soft tourquoise and a deep sea green. When
mixed with other glazes the effect is often amazing.

custer 46
gerstley 12
soad ash 5
barium 5
lithium 2
whiting 10
flint 20
____________
100
add titanium 4
copper carb 5

thanks in advance for any input in the amount of
replacement for barium and what you would replace it
with...str. carb, magnesium?

Hi Edy,

I would try it two ways - leave out the barium carb abd replace it with 3.5
Strontium Carb or replace it with an extra 2.5 whiting.

All three glazes are probably going to craze by the way - not much you can
do about that with all that soda ash.
