hey all,
quick question,
I buying a small 120v kiln and will be firing mostly red and earthenware and
I have a question concerning a bisque firing. In several books I have read
they say to fire earthenware at cone 4 or cone 6. which is better, firing at
cone 4 or cone 6 when firing bisque? Most of the glazes I am looking at
using are fired at cone 5.
thanks for any help,

Scott - Go back and read over where you got that information. I think you'l=
l
find the earthenware temperature is 04 or 06, not 4 or 6. If you are
planning on firing to cone 5, then you're in the mid-temperature stoneware.
Please check this web site and see that cone 06 is 1828=B0F to 1855=B0F,
depending on speed of firing:

It's a good site with links to help you understand more about cones.

Scott,
Think you forgot the "0" before the 4 or 6. Most folks I have talked to fire the bisque at 04 and the glaze firing at 06 for earthenware. We fired that way in our studio in Arizona and have continued with good success in Oregon.
