Ron Roy said to Linda:
"One thing I would insist on would be a central
(outside venting) vacuum system - especially if the
studio is going to be inside the house."
I am wondering when, in the building of a house, you
put the vacuum in. I have just put in insulation, but
the wall board is not yet up. Is it too late, or is it
a good time to install an outside venting vacuum
system?
Also, is there a particularly good brand of these that
work in a ceramic studio?
Thanks in advance.
Best wishes,
Lillian

I have a Beam Central Vac that I got from Ward's Burner Supply in
Tennessee. I've used it mainly by hooking it to one simple exhaust
pipe out the wall and leaving the long suction hose directly on the
vac. The exhaust run is about 10 feet. When we redid the studio at
one point my contractor wanted to install the kind of piping system
that's used in houses, so I could hook up the hose to an exhaust pipe
systm in the walls in several places around the studio. The vac
never worked as well with this system to I've left it the old way. SO
you can install the vac on a wall with a simple exhaust pipe through
the wall. Then purchase a long enough hose to get around your studio
while connected to the vac itself. Mine is about 30 feet long. I did
put a few holes in the walls of my studio to get the hose into some
rooms. It works great, but remember that these vacs are dealing with
very fine dust and more of it than in a regular house. You have to
clean the filters out regularly when suction starts weakening. You
may want to talk to Mark Ward at Ward Burner. There may be more
powerful vacs these days. Mine was the standard one he sold to
potters about 15+ years ago..
