Hello All...
I am just 6 days away from the trip I have been looking forward to for years.
I leave for Tokyo, Hakone, Kanazawa, and Kyoto for the next two weeks.
Sadly, I will not be in Tokyo long enough to get to Mashiko, but would
like to hear of your favorite pottery places to visit.
Many thanks.

Hi Susan,
First of all Mashiko is not in Tokyo but north of there by
train and/or bus. Check with Japan Travel (JT), info should
be easier to get once you're there. If you ask at the hotel
you will probably be surprised how much they will help you
get where you're going, if you're courteous and polite that
goes a long way too. I would suggest the Shigaraki and
Seto Ceramic Museums. There should be info on their
web sites. What did you hear about in hakone? I did hear
about a pottery there but if it's just one I'd stay where
there are clusters of potteries that way you can see more.
There is a bus that goes from Kanazawa station out to
Kutani-yaki, remember that is porcelain. In Kyoto you
may find the Kawai Kanjiro House interesting. The Kindai
Bijitsu Kan (Contemporary Museum of Art) may also be
worthwhile. Temples in Kyoto are fascinating as well.Ryoanji
Nanzenji, Kinkakuji, the Philosopher's Path, etc.
Of course one could go on and on.... Hope that gets you
started though. How long is your trip?

If I were getting to go again to Japan I would not miss making a trip
to the Miho museum outside of Shigaraki. It is reachable from Kyoto
and a never to be forgotten experience. BUT you must check their
website to be sure that they are open during the time you will be
there....I just looked open from March 15 to June something.

Kanazawa was the first place I saw a live Tanuki (racoon dog) in Japan.
Don't miss the muesum there. They have an excellent collection of Ko-kutani:
Ishikawa Prefectural Art Museum
(Dewa-machi, Kanazawa)
Displays of Maeda Clan Hierlooms and a Kokutani Porcelain Collection
Tel.076-231-7580
In Tokyo, don't miss the National Museum at Ueno park:

The Mingeikan is also interesting:

If you are in Kyoto, you are not too far from one of my favorite ceramic
museums in Japan (2nd,only to Hamada's Sankokai in Mashiko):
Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka:
