This is the three-chambered kiln built by Mark Zamantakis and fired by him
for 27 years. It is in good condition complete with a large shed and
smokestack with spark arrestors. It has wood-fired thousands of high
quality pots through the years. The walls of the kiln are beautifully
glazed solid.
This kiln could operate for a single entity, a group of organizations,
schools, colleges, or for a consortium of individuals. Persons who have
fired the kiln in the past are available as consultants to assist in
orchestrating successful firings of this kiln. There are more than a dozen
potters from Colorado and Kansas that have a working knowledge of this
kiln. This kiln was built to be a community kiln and was operated as such
for 27 years.
The property includes 10 acres of forested land with ponds. The house has
living quarters of kitchen, two bathrooms, bedroom loft, large living room
and a large studio area. Winters are difficult and snow is an issue, but
many people live year round in Valley of the Sun. The summers are Rocky

Current owner is Lowell =93lou=94 Lemesany. He bought the property where the=
kiln is located for $164,000. in 2001. The current price is $240,000
listed with Pine Cone Properties of Fairplay Colorado, 719-836-3153. The
property appraised at $175,000 in 2001.
The property is 10 acres near Fairplay, Colorado with a 1400 square foot
house, well and septic. There is a large clay studio in the house. The
three chamber climbing kiln has not been touched since 2001 and is in
excellent condition. The house has living quarters with bedrooms and two
bathrooms. The kiln has a shed built around it and has protection from the
elements. Each chamber is five by six by five and a half feet high. The
property includes a wood splitter. A second smaller propane fired updraft
kiln is in the shed.
This is a high altitude property with many trees and a small natural pond.
The forested area in a subdivision and national forest nearby will require
a fire permit of some kind to operate the kiln in compliance with the
local fire regulations. A local fire inspection will outline the needs.
The kiln emits smoke and no sparks.
Many artists statewide are interested in this kiln. Many have work with it
through the years. An elderly Mark Zamantakis is available to discuss the
kiln and how to fire it. Gary and Rona Tyson, Clyod Snook, Jerry Thiel,
Shelley Schreiber, Tom Forte, Vincent and Carolyn Tolpo, and many others
have participated in the many communal firings of the kiln. Many of these
clay artists would continue the use of the kiln and would participate in
its operations.
