I fired with the late sandra johnstone a few times.
She had a clay body of fireclay and sand and started
salting at cone 5. The kiln was uneven, but got orange
peel all around.
use a cone 5 liner.
Not sure about the ash effect, but you can definitely
get an orange peel at that temperature, with the right
clay body.
