Hi Clayart,
If you are going to use your glaze calculation software to file
recipes, back it up, PLEASE!
My Insight files seem to have spontaneously evaporated. We were away
at the time and
now I get home and notice that he said to back up your work.
I have been able to reconstruct much of the work from other places,
not all. And that doesn't
count all the many hours spent diligently posting photographs to the
recipes, the notes
written, etc.
I have written Tony Hansen twice and have gotten no response. His
website talks about
how responsive he is to his customers, but I for one am not finding
that to be true.
I will be trying to figure out if there is anything I can do to find
my work....my husband seems
to think it must be on the computer someplace....I will take my
laptop to an Apple expert
in the next few days in hopes if the stuff is there he can find it.
I am not a big computer person and it took a lot of coaching to get
me working with Insight,
but I found it very satisfying, loved his indexes of materials
information, and could noodle
around endlessly. It is a way I have really found satisfaction with
the computer.
SO NOW THIS!
I know lots of people are relying on these programs and I hope
everybody will back up
their work.

Hi Eleanora,
Recipe files are in a directory called recipe under the Insight directory. You
don't mention whether you lost just the recipes or the materials db as well. I
assume just the recipes as you say you've been able to recreate
most of them. Recipe files are numbered files with the extension RCX, eg.
100.RCX If you search your machine for files with the RCX extension you may find
them if they are not where they should be. How they would have got there is an
open question. It may also bee worth checking the trash can on the Mac in case
they got in there somehow.
If you find the recipes somewhere else simply moving them back may overwrite
the new ones you've created, because I suspect it will have started creating
them again from its starting number - 100 I think. I may be wrong on this but
before moving any to the recipes directory just check you aren't going to
clobber stuff you need. Ideally do a backup before trying to move anything.
As to backups - yes do 'em - keep multiple backups on a rotating set of disks
or something. Certainly do not, simply have one backup disk and keep
overwriting it. Label and date each backup.
Thanx
D

I know nothing about Insight or about the internals of Apple operating
systems, but I'd assume things are pretty similar to Windows regarding data
files. Namely, that when one deletes a file (vertantly or inadvertantly),
what is deleted is not the file itself, but just a pointer TO the file. So
that a 'lost' file is likely to still be there somewhere on your hard
disk--but you can't 'see' it.
So if the operating system believes the file is deleted (its pointer gone),
it will feel free to REUSE the space (formerly occupied by the file) for
new files! Thus, your lost file can become overwritten by new stuff, and
it will be impossible for your "Apple expert" to restore it!
So your best chances for recovery are to stop doing anything that creates
new files--which probably means to stop using your computer until your
expert can look into the problem.
Windows XP (the current version) has a recovery feature called "System
Restore" that enables one to 'go back in time,' as it were, in order to put
things back as they were before the loss. For older Windows systems
(pre-XP) there a program available called "GoBack" that does the same
thing. Perhaps there is something similar for Apple--I dunno.

Personal computers are still pretty much at the stage of development that
automobiles were a hundred years ago. I'm sure you've seen photos of cars
disabled at the side of the road for any number of problems that just don't
happen these days, there drivers goin' at it with hammer and prybar, with
not one, but three spare tires hanging on the back, and so on.
Ordinary citizens just have a hard time doing what ought to be as easy as
getting into an unfamiliar rental car and driving away with justified
confidence.
I (heck, we *all*) feel your pain!

Hi Eleanora,
Sorry to hear that you lost all your recipes - I had
the same thing happen with Masterglaze. Now I use
Matrix. Tony Hansen is probably at nceca and isn't
getting his mail. I also own Insight and he has
been very helpful and quick to respond.

Hi Ladies,
I am sorry to butt in on this conversation, but wanted to re-introduce myself to you both.
I met you Eleanora, at Peter King's workshop this past March.
Linda, several years ago I joined Clayart and you and I emailed each other for several months. At the time you were selling your home in New York. You were very encouraging and I was hoping to meet up with you again in cyber space. I still have a picture of one of the rooms from that home in my studio as inspiration.
All my best,
Maggie (Nagle) Leysath

Hi There
never had this problem with insight on mac been using 10 years or so.
The files never disappear just the reference to them is corrupt. Will
need some disk utility to rebuild the directory.
As a precaution do not write any new files to the drive as this will
proberly overwrite the hidden files will be now marked as empty space
on the disk. Are you using os9 or osx.
