You can print out PDF's of four different routes that include gallery
info and lists of shows/exhibitors:

http://nceca.net/conference/2006/2006shuttletours.html

The only things missing are the maps that are usually in the actual
program. But they usually aren't very accurate anyway.

Hi Kathleen,

I just wanted to make you aware of a show that is not on the list in
case you get one. It is at Backspace which is a coffee shop that serves
excellent coffee and organic pizza and has wifi.Kitty corner from
Backspace is a show at the Portland Art Center. I saw some NCECA Guides
there. Both locations are on the corner of 5th and NW couch in old town
Portland. From there Butters Gallery is around the corner on Davis
between 5th and 6th. the Chinese Gardens-which is worth seeing is on
Everett and SE 3rd and there is a show there as well. I hope you find a
guide soon.
Feel free to email me off line if you want more ideas!

Oh and there is paid on street parking there but if you are staying near
the OCC you can take the MAX downtown and there is actually a stop that
is Chinatown. From there just walk away from the river (West) and you
will reach the Chinese Gardens.

Take Care!

Hi All -
Here is the text from a press release for a great show in Hillsboro (just
East of Portland):
"
The Glenn and Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center in Hillsboro, Oregon, is
hosting a special four-day installation and exhibit featuring wood-fired
clay arts from the Dragon Kiln, a large Japanese-design wood-fueled
"anagama" kiln located in Astoria, Oregon.

The exhibit is a life-sized model of the kiln itself, with several hundred
clay works re-stacked in the same locations in which they were placed when
the kiln was fired. The marks from the river of fire that flows around the
work during the firing can clearly be seen in this exhibit format. The kiln,
roughly 40 feet long, consumed five cords of wood during three days of
round-the-clock firing.

The actual shape of the kiln, in reality a massive inverted boat-hull shape
constructed of hard bricks, is replicated here with life-sized replicas of
whale rib bones, painstakingly cast and glazed by the same artists whose
work is represented in the show. While the finished sculptures, vessels and
pots made in the actual kiln are a primary focus of this exhibit, the venue
of display is a stunning work of art in itself.

The anagama is surrounded with stacks of wood, unfired earth, and beach
debris, immersing the viewer in the power and presence of the firing and its
coastal environment.

The exhibit opens Wednesday, March 8. Gallery hours 9am - 9pm.

The show continues on Thursday, March 9, from 9am - 9pm.

There will be an artists reception from 5pm -9pm Thursday evening.
In addition, the evening will feature a lecture and discussion at 7pm by
Barry Lopez, author of "Before the Temple of Fire", a descriptive and poetic
article about the Dragon Kiln that was published in Harper's Magazine. Mr.
Lopez is a nationally known author and speaker who resides in Oregon.

The exhibit will remain on view Friday from 9 -6, and Saturday 10-4.

Directions: The Glenn and Viola Walters Cultural Arts Center is located at
527 East Main Street in Hillsboro, OR 97123. It sits at the corner of 5th
Avenue and Main Street in downtown Hillsboro. It is just two blocks off the
MAX Blue line. Please call (503) 615-3485 or visit
www.ci.hillsboro.or.us/wcac for more information.
"

See you at the Convention Center and the Red Lion.

When NCECA was in Rochester, NY, about a dozen years ago, I approached a
gallery that represented me very early on, with a proposal to do a
functional clay show, a selling show, with work by about 10 full time
functional potters...
Linda Christianson, Stephen Hill, Michael Simon, Ellen Shankin, Don Sprague,
Nick Joerling, etc. They took it on. NCECA wouldn't list it, put it on the
bus list, do anything for it, because it was a "for profit" show. But, we
put up flyers around the convention site, put stacks of postcards around the
registration desks, and hoped for the best.
It was pretty much of a total sell-out. Somehow the word spread and potters
came from far and wide. People were dying to see good functional pots. All
the potters made money, and the gallery got a lot of good publicity.
It really helped that I was local and the gallery was willing.
Best,
