re; textural glazes

these are not necessarily textural glazes and I am bypassing the
word 'functional' in your post..you can experiment and decide.


just for fun , some things to try:

You can try additions of up to 20% magnesium carbonate to a clear or
base glaze.
will induce crawling, usually dry, but sometimes the crawled areas will
soften and melt and become quite hard and glassy.
appropriate for say, some outside surfaces of functional ware,
depending of course on other factors.

Other glaze or slip additions:
try adding sand or grog to slip or glaze.

I have gotten wonderful lovely beautiful crawling with thick
applications of certain shinos..

here's something I used long ago, in the late 1980's on large
sculptural vessels I was making at the time
I do not have the source, probably a CM article!

play with it on the outside of the vessel
try adding colorants.... other additions


Desert Wash
fired to cone 5-6

50 % borax
50% zircopax
