Has anyone used the Bailey kiln vent system? It is a lot less money,(
$208.00) than the others, but instead of exhausting through the top and
bottom of the kiln you exhaust through a hole that you drill in the side
wall near the bottom of the kiln and you either leave open the top spy hole
open or rely on having leaks through the lid seal or joins between
sections. The exhaust fan mounts on the wall next to the kiln. This means
that you don't have to dismantle your kiln to install it. But I am
wondering if it is a effective. Anyone? David Jenkins

Yes, I use the Bailey kiln vent and find it very useful. It does work
well, and it makes for a neat installation. It vents through the bottom
of the kiln, and every effectively at that.

I have it set up on a large SHIMPO oval electric which I use to fire big
pieces of mine to low fire and bisque temperatures. So I can't comment
on longevity of the unit. However it appears it will last a very long
time. I just moved the kiln, and the flexible venting (aluminum dryer
vent) is on the fragile side so I'll have to replace one length, but
that's an easy replace from Home Depot. The key to its success is the
way the unit keeps negative pressure inside the kiln by spacing the vent
away from the unit by about a quarter of an inch.

I'd recommend it to anyone.

Hi David,
I have the Bailey vent system. Bought it years ago for an old Cress
kiln and it worked fine mounted as described. When I bought a Skutt
awhile later I modified it to mount below the kiln using sheet metal
ducting and things from Home Depot and it also works great that way.
The Skutt was pre-drilled for their vent system, but since I had the
Bailey already I wanted to use it. I like that it mounts on the wall
and is away from the kiln. The motor is quiet and efficient. I
originally used (and still use) flexible ducting between the kiln and
motor due to space and since I can deal with it. It lasts for quite a
few firings, but eventually corrodes and needs to be replaced. It is
easy to do, just make sure that you aim the in and outputs of the fan
so they are easy to get to. I didn't; so it was a little trickier
than it needed to be. :-)
Of course, if you are good at that sort of thing, it is best to use
rigid metal ducting between the kiln and the fan. it will last
longer, I'm sure.

I installed one on my Olympic kiln several years ago and it works very well.

I have one. It does not work well during the early firing stage (wax burn
off). But mine is old and perhaps they have been improved.
