here is our regular breakdown.
nceca 150 bucks
plane average 300
hotel this year 92 X 3 300 bucks
meals 100.
buy crap at the vendors 3000
keep receipts and deduct most of it.
if one is careful, that bill can be cut in half.
bargain air fare his year for kurt and me...216 each round trip.
we split the hotel bill, 200 each.
eat lite. and then stand around at lunch time with
a sad look on your face, someone will take you to lunch.
or scavenge the tables in the clayart room...lots of free food.
or, you can borrow money from joyce lee. she is a soft touch.
she never asks for it back.
or, you can rent a van, set up shop on the street and
sell pots. that guy on the street does about 15,000++ bucks in sales
every year at nceca. who knows, maybe 30,000.
marta was selling pots from her hotel room. you know those little
hand built things...50 bucks each. no wonder there was always
a line in front of marta's room...(or was she selling pots? hmmmm
(that is our new marta, marta maytree, to hell with glovichikishit.)

Mel. Thanks for the info. I was tempted. Have friends in Portland.
But a jet ticket for me is around $900.00 (Jean is flying into Mpls.
next week while I stay home with the dog.)
What kind of pots does the "street guy" sell? Now, that's an
idea! ;^)

Dear Lee;
I think you would do really well with your pots because
Clayart/Claycraft is a 'built in ' market for them. The ArtStream
project is an Airstream trailer, parked outside the Conference center,
where ten or so potters show their work.....as one sells, there is a
replacement put in its place. I bought a fine 7" diameter soda/residual
salt bowl from Matt Kelleher for $36.
Cheers, Hank

Don't know about this year, but last year, there was an airstream =
trailer parked beside the conference hotel and it housed the work of =
several different potters. They had either removed or covered all the =
furniture in the trailer with shelving instead and pots were everywhere. =
Most of the work in there was functional, but it was really nice work =
too! Also, IIRC, there was a group of students on the sidewalk in a =
tent selling hot chocolate in handmade mugs.

I saw that parked across from the Convention Center, but I didn't get
over to look at it.
We have a local photographer named Izzy Schwartz who runs, as a
hobby, a mobile art gallery out of a mini-van on Second Saturdays
when the galleries have their receptions. It's called Izzy's Mini-Van
Go Gallery. He only shows 2D work though, since he hadn't figured out
how to show sculpture since the van drives around to several
locations each evening. He'd have to figure out a way to keep things
from falling over.

Hi Lee
Everyone's quoting 1000 for flights, I track Seattle to Tokyo on travelocity
and right now its running at 474. Our son in Tokyo also sees some
incredible fares on that side, especially to the east coast, and this time
of year is probably cheaper for travel,

I'm loving the shot glasses, ones reserved for sake and the other for single
malt, boy did I luck out.

If you're "foreign" you will pay $210 if you register early, $255 if
you register late. They say it's because of the additional postage to
mail the journal and directory.
As far as rooms go, many people are 4 to a room which makes it a lot
cheaper and then there are hotels further away that are also a lot cheaper.
There are ways to do it a lot cheaper. Your biggest hurtle is going
to be that $1000 plane ticket from Japan.
Friends and I were discussing how one might do NCECA ULTRA cheap but
I don't want to go into that here.
You could go to international Potter's fair at Aberystwyth in Wales.
It's smaller, cheaper and a lot friendlier (if that were possible
;-). Ask your friend Genvieve about it. We met at the last one. The
next one will be in 2007. There you have to make sure you book REALLY
early because tickets are limited and the really cheap student rooms go
fast!

And you can volunteer at NCECA for a reduced rate. Remember those
people giving you your registration? And people at the doors? But the
best gig is to present something......like" Being a Gaijin Potter in
Japan", they pay your airfare and give you a pass.

might worth their pay. ;^) I'll share a preview when you get here.

Hi Lee,
If you do get to Cornwall a couple of pottery must sees:
1. The China Clay Museum near St Austell
2. The County Museum in Truro ... a decent little municipal museum in a
pleasant market town. Their ceramic gallery includes a few B.Leach pots as
well as samples of studio pottery from makers who came before him

About pots tipping over, for goodness sakes, your friend lives in =
earthquake
country. Doesn't he know about the earthquake putty that you can adhere =
the
pots to a board and they will sustain a lot of bumps. I believe it is =
even
sold out there as that is where I got mine. It comes in clear and =
white.
It could also be called Museum Putty used for adhering the art work to =

Thanks Russel. I have organized a small gathering of fulltime
potters from ClayCraft list in Mashiko, in June. Spaces filled quickly.
I have friends who stay at a cottage in Cornwall for a couple
months every year (they are both novelists.) We stay with them in
Minneapolis when we visit (Jean is going back next week for a couple
weeks.)
This year, our friends are going to Cormwall for a whole year. I
may go visit them since they will be there long enough for me not to
disturb their quiet too much. Need to make a pilgrimage to St.
Ives. Hehe. I can visit a "plastic bag" factory anytime. ;^)
