dental tools for sale (how about free?)

updated sat 18 mar 06

i get dental tools from my dentist - free.
they appear to be in great shape to me
but are no longer suitable for the dentist

my dentist throws the no longer useable tools in a box
and he gives them to any patient who asks

so ------ ask your dentist
you might be in luck

I have been carving porcelain and I would like to try some dental tools.
What is the name of the kind of dental tool I would ask my dentist for?

take whatever he has & you'll like all of what you get.

i gave my dentist a simple pot & he passed to me several old tools. ALL of their tools wear out in time. typically he said they send them out for re-plating, refurbishing, but in time they do still wear out & get tossed out.

i get old tool now *just because* when i drop in for a check up. i pass them around to other potters.

see ya

steve

"What is the name of the kind of dental tool I would ask my dentist for?"

Just ask your dentist if he has any discarded tools you could have.
Then, when you see what he has, take what you think might work for you,
go home and try them out.

If you don't like what you took, take them back or just keep them
for some future possible use.

i just got about a dozen different kind of tools from my dental hygenist.
they have to replace the old ones for new ones once in a while.
take all before they have to discard them,
and dont pay for it, and dont try to sell them.
it wouldnt be fair. whoever wants to sell them for two bucks,
its ridiculous. he or she got them free.
hey, i have some plastic clay bags (empty) anyone wants to
buy them? 50 cents each plus shipping :)
cheers, marta

All tools can serve a purpose.

I use dental stone to make tile casts and all of the tools
come in handy. some to trim and carve in the stone. Others
for fine detail work on bisque or leather clay.

I just ask for whatever is being discarded.

hope this helps.

Not to put anyone's knickers in a twist (talk about crossposting!)
but a word of caution here.

I was informed recently by the police-officer-neighbor-of-mine that
possession of dental tools is (in some locations) illegal. At least =
here in
S Florida. It has something to do with a rash of (specific nationality)
persons in the Miami area practicing dentistry without a license, =
usually
from their garages. In other locations, these wonderful tools are =
considered
"lock-picking devices", and are similarly banned (CT) (sigh).

Personally, I have a full set. I keep some in the house in one of the
bathrooms, and some with my clay tools. (A former partner was a =
dentist.) =20
"They" can take away my tools when they can pry them out of my cold dead
clay-covered hands. If they can get past my rifle. IMHO.

Dental tools can usually be found for sale from Harbor Freight (keyword
search the website). You can also get them sometimes from
Sportsmansguide.com, and you can always buy them (very pricey) new from
Patterson Dental Supply. There's nothing quite like shiny new tools =
.
