every day i had to do a drawing for mr. uchida.
some kind of pot. anything i wanted to do.
we would say `smart american boy, do new`.
i did that, every day.
would bring the drawing and put it on his desk.
`melsan, melsan come here...drawing time.`
he would look at it...then scan the books, hundreds
of books and magazines from all over the world. shelves all over his
drawing studio.
he would pick one, leaf through it..and show
me `my new pot`. the same pot i just drew.

so.
he would laugh....`nothing new, nothing new`.
damn.

at the end of my stay in kyoto, drew a pix of a tubular
mug, tabs with holes with a walnut handle inserted with
bamboo pins. white inside, jet black outside.

damn nice.

he laughed and laughed.
went into a cupboard and brought out the exact mug.
he designed it in 1939. bauhaus design.
his teacher in art school was a bauhaus teacher.
damn.
he laughed again..said..`melsan and sensai have same brain.
when you work on a wheel, just try and fine a new design.
your experience, timing and kiln makes anything...your own.
